Exit understeer happens when the car refuses to rotate as you get back to throttle, pushing wide instead of tracking the line out of the corner. It’s often described as the car “not wanting to finish the corner.” The fix is to rebalance grip so the front can keep guiding the car as weight shifts rearward under acceleration: soften the front springs, stiffen the rear springs, or both.
Here’s what’s happening, and how to work through it.
What exit understeer actually feels like
You’ve tracked through the apex fine. Then you get on the throttle and the car pushes wide, forcing you to back out of the gas or add steering just to stay on line. Acceleration gets delayed, exit speed drops, and that cost carries all the way down the next straight.
This is different from entry understeer (which shows up during braking and turn-in) or apex understeer (which shows up mid-corner at steady state). Exit understeer only appears once you’re back on the throttle.
Why it happens
As throttle is applied, weight shifts rearward. The rear tires gain load and traction, which is exactly what you want for putting power down, but the front tires lose load at the same time. The front was doing the job of guiding the car through the apex, and now it has less grip to keep doing that job while the rear becomes increasingly planted. The result is a car that resists rotation and drifts outward right as you want to accelerate.
The whole problem: your rear tires have more effective grip than your front tires under power, right when the front needs to hold its line the most.
How to fix it
Springs are the most direct lever here, since exit behavior is driven by how quickly weight shifts rearward under throttle. Work through these in order.
- Soften the front springs. This helps the front tires maintain better contact with the track as weight shifts off them, improving their ability to keep guiding the car out of the corner.
- Stiffen the rear springs. If the front change isn’t enough, reduce rear grip under acceleration instead. This lets the car rotate more freely on exit rather than sitting flat and pushing.
- Check the differential. A diff that’s too tight under acceleration resists rotation on its own, independent of tire grip. This is a more advanced layer, worth checking once spring balance is set.
Start with the front springs. It’s the more forgiving change, and it directly targets the tire that’s losing effectiveness.
When it’s not the springs
If spring changes aren’t enough, look at rear anti-roll bar stiffness. A stiffer rear bar during acceleration can also reduce rear grip and help the car rotate, though it interacts with apex balance too, so change it in small steps and recheck how the car feels mid-corner.
The bigger picture
Exit understeer is a balance problem between rotation and traction. The car needs to accept power without losing the front’s ability to guide it. Once you can name the phase (exit) and the imbalance (rear grip dominance), the fix list above is the fix list.
