SimReader Setup Requirements
Most simulators work with onRails out of the box. Where a one-time setup step is needed, follow the instructions below.
| Simulator | Setup Required | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Assetto Corsa | None | Works automatically. |
| Assetto Corsa Competizione | None | Works automatically. |
| Automobilista 2 | One-time | Go to Options → System → Shared Memory and set to Project CARS 2. Restart the sim. |
| iRacing | None | Works automatically. |
| Le Mans Ultimate | One-time | Go to Settings → Gameplay → Enable Plugins and set to ON. Restart LMU. |
| Project Cars 2 | One-time | Go to Options → System → Shared Memory and set to Project CARS 2. Restart the sim. |
| rFactor 2 | One-time | Copy rF2_onRails.dll from your onRails folder to rFactor 2\Bin64\Plugins\, then enable it in CustomPluginVariables.JSON. Restart rFactor 2. |
All simulators must run in borderless window mode for the onRails app to overlay.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is onRails?
onRails is a sim racing setup tool that runs as a transparent overlay on top of your simulator. It has two modules — the Setup Developer for building a baseline setup from scratch, and the Setup Engineer for tuning it lap by lap. Both modules can read tire temps and lap times directly from your sim.
How does it work?
onRails uses a driver feedback methodology — it asks how the car felt, you select from provided answers, and it recommends specific setup changes based on proven real-world racing knowledge. No telemetry files to import, no spreadsheets. Press a hotkey to snap tire temps and a hotkey to capture your last lap time directly from the sim.
Which car types are supported?
onRails supports six car types: Sports Cars (GT3, GTE, prototypes), Touring Cars (TCR, BTCC), Open-Wheel (F1, IndyCar, Formula vintage), Stock Cars (NASCAR), Sprint Cars, and Karts. Both road courses and ovals are supported.
Does it work with real race cars?
Yes. The setup methodology is based on real-world racing knowledge and has been used by amateur and professional motorsport teams. The advice is physics-based and applies equally to sim and real-world racing.
Do I need a second monitor?
No. onRails runs as a transparent overlay on top of your sim, so it works on a single screen. A second monitor is supported — use the display button in the launcher to jump the app to any connected screen with one click.
How do I customise the hotkeys?
Open Settings from the app header. All major hotkeys are rebindable — including tire temp snapshot, lap time snapshot, and In-Race Engineer keys. Keyboard keys and wheel/controller buttons (up to 20) can all be mapped.
I bought onRails — where do I download it?
Downloads are handled by the platform you purchased from. Check your Itch.io purchases page or your Steam library. If you’re having trouble, email us and we’ll sort it out.
What is your refund policy?
We offer a 100% money-back guarantee. If onRails isn’t right for you for any reason, contact us at support@virtualracecarengineer.com and we’ll sort it out. You can also request refunds directly through Itch.io or Steam using their standard refund processes.
I was a VRCE 2020 or SDT 2021 user. What do I need to know?
onRails replaces both apps — the Setup Engineer replaces VRCE 2020 and the Setup Developer replaces SDT 2021, rebuilt from the ground up into a single unified tool. Your old apps will continue to work, but onRails is where all future development is focused. If you have questions about the transition, email directly.
