How Do I Fix Exit Oversteer?

Exit oversteer happens when your rear tires can’t handle the combination of engine torque and available grip as you apply throttle, causing the rear to step out under acceleration. The fix is to help the rear tires maintain traction as weight shifts onto them: soften the rear springs, manage how power is applied, or both, so the rear isn’t overwhelmed the moment you get back on the gas.

Here’s what’s happening, and how to work through it.

What exit oversteer actually feels like

You’re accelerating out of the corner and the rear begins to rotate more than intended, sometimes immediately as throttle is applied, sometimes progressively as more power comes in. You have to back out of the throttle or add corrective steering to keep it pointed straight, and excessive wheelspin often comes with it.

This is different from entry oversteer (which shows up during braking and turn-in) or apex oversteer (which shows up mid-corner at steady state). Exit oversteer only appears once you’re accelerating.

Why it happens

As throttle is applied, weight shifts rearward, which should increase rear load and traction. But even with that extra load, it’s still possible for the demand from engine torque to exceed what the rear tires can handle. When that happens, traction is lost and the rear steps out, and the car becomes unstable under power.

The whole problem: your rear tires are being asked for more grip than they can deliver under acceleration, right when they need to hold the car straight while putting power down.

How to fix it

Springs are the most direct lever here, since exit behavior is driven by how the rear handles load under acceleration. Work through these in order.

  1. Soften the rear springs. This helps the rear tires maintain better contact with the track surface, increasing their ability to handle acceleration without losing grip.
  2. Manage power delivery. If the car has excess torque relative to available grip, easing into throttle rather than applying it abruptly reduces the demand placed on the rear tires at the moment they’re most vulnerable.
  3. Check the differential. A diff that’s too loose under acceleration can contribute to inconsistent traction and instability. This is a more advanced layer, worth checking once spring balance is set.

Start with the rear springs. Be careful not to overcorrect: increasing rear grip too much can eliminate oversteer but introduce understeer, particularly in the transition from apex to exit.

When it’s not the springs

If softer rear springs aren’t enough, look at rear anti-roll bar stiffness. A softer rear bar under acceleration can also help maintain grip, though it interacts with apex balance too, so change it in small steps and recheck how the car feels mid-corner.

The bigger picture

Exit oversteer is a traction problem, not a lack of overall grip. The goal isn’t to remove rotation entirely, but to control it so power can be applied confidently and progressively. Once you can name the phase (exit) and the imbalance (rear traction deficit), the fix list above is the fix list.
