Springs support the car’s weight and control how fast it transfers between corners, under braking, and off the throttle. Stiffer springs resist weight transfer and load the tires faster; softer springs let more weight move gradually, which can either help or hurt grip depending on the corner.
What a spring is actually doing
Every time the car brakes, turns, or accelerates, weight shifts off some tires and onto others. Springs are what let that weight move at all, and how stiff they are decides how quickly and how much. A stiffer spring resists compression, so it transfers load to the tire faster and keeps the chassis flatter. A softer spring compresses more, transferring load more gradually and letting the chassis roll or pitch further.
Stiffer isn’t automatically faster
- Stiffer springs reduce body roll and pitch, sharpen response, and can improve aero platform stability at speed. They also reduce mechanical grip on bumpy surfaces, since the tire has less suspension travel to stay in contact with the track.
- Softer springs keep more mechanical grip over bumps and curbs, but let the chassis move more, which can feel vague and slows how quickly load reaches the tire.
Front-to-rear spring balance sets your handling bias
The stiffness relationship between front and rear springs is one of the biggest levers on overall balance. Stiffer front springs relative to the rear transfer load to the front tires faster, which can reduce understeer on entry but risks oversteer on exit if overdone. Stiffer rear springs relative to the front do the opposite, they favor rear grip and can reduce oversteer on exit at the cost of front bite.
The bigger picture
Springs are the foundation the rest of the suspension works on top of. Anti-roll bars and dampers refine how the car behaves once the spring rate is already set, so get springs in a reasonable range first before fine-tuning with either. Springs first. They set the car’s basic weight-transfer behavior everywhere, in a straight line and in corners. Anti-roll bars only affect corner-specific roll resistance, so they’re a finer adjustment layered on top of a spring rate that’s already in the right range.
Why does my car feel better on smooth tracks with stiffer springs but worse on bumpy ones?
Stiffer springs reduce suspension travel, which means less ability to absorb bumps and curbs. On a smooth track that tradeoff costs you nothing; on a bumpy one it costs mechanical grip every time a tire loses contact with the track.
Do front and rear springs need to be the same stiffness?
