Anti-roll bars resist body roll by connecting the left and right suspension at that axle, so when one side compresses in a corner, the bar transfers some of that load to the other side. Stiffening the front bar shifts grip balance toward the rear; stiffening the rear bar shifts it toward the front.
What a bar does that a spring can’t
Springs react to any vertical motion, whether the car is going straight or turning. An anti-roll bar only does something when the two sides of an axle move differently, which mostly happens during cornering. That makes it a way to control roll stiffness somewhat independently of how the car rides in a straight line.
How bar stiffness shifts balance

- Stiffer rear bar. Does the same thing at the rear, increasing rear grip relative to the front, but can overload the outside rear tire and induce oversteer if pushed too far.
Because front and rear bars work against each other in this way, the front-to-rear bar balance is one of the fastest ways to shift a car from understeer to oversteer or back without touching ride height or overall suspension travel.
Bars vs. springs for the same goal
A stiffer spring and a stiffer bar can both reduce body roll, but they behave differently. Springs affect ride everywhere, including bumps and curbs. Bars mostly affect cornering behavior and leave straight-line ride comfort closer to unchanged. If you want to sharpen cornering balance without making the car harsher over bumps, the bar is usually the better tool.
