Most of the time, a car that won’t rotate on entry is suffering from entry understeer: the front tires are overloaded relative to the rear during braking and turn-in, so steering input stops producing rotation. But a few other culprits can produce the exact same feeling, so it’s worth ruling them out before you start changing springs.
Start with the grip-balance check
If the car feels heavy on the wheel and refuses to tighten no matter how much lock you add, that’s the classic signature of entry understeer, caused by too much weight piling onto the front tires under braking. Three other causes worth checking first
- Locked differential under braking. A diff that resists rotation on overrun fights the car’s ability to turn regardless of tire grip. If the car won’t rotate even at low speed with minimal weight transfer, check diff coast lockup before touching springs.
- Too much front toe-in. Toe-in adds straight-line stability at the cost of initial turn-in response. If your baseline has more than a small amount of front toe-in, that alone can make the car feel slow to rotate.
- Braking too late or too straight. Trail braking, easing off the brake as you add steering, keeps the front tires loaded and working while you turn. Braking hard in a straight line and then turning in on a fully released pedal can make even a well-balanced car feel like it won’t rotate, because you’ve stopped using the front’s braking grip to help initiate the turn.
The bigger picture
“Won’t rotate” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Confirm it’s happening specifically on entry (brakes on, wheel just turning in) rather than at the apex or on exit, then work through the grip-balance and mechanical checks above in order.
