Braking understeer happens when the front tires lock or run out of grip before the rears during heavy braking, so the car keeps running straight even as you turn the wheel into the corner. What braking understeer actually feels like
You brake hard approaching a corner and start to turn in while still on the brakes. Instead of rotating, the car pushes toward the outside, the steering feels heavy or unresponsive, and adding more lock doesn’t help. In severe cases the front tires are audibly locking or the ABS is cycling hard. This is different from plain entry understeer in that it’s specifically tied to brake pressure, not just the act of turning in.
Why it happens
Under hard braking, weight transfers forward, which should give the front tires more grip. But braking also uses up a share of each front tire’s total available grip just to slow the car down. Ask the same tire to brake and turn at the same time and you’re stacking two demands on one contact patch. If brake bias is too far forward, the fronts are absorbing more braking force than they can spare for cornering, and they run out of grip for steering first.
The whole problem: your front tires are being asked to do more braking work than they have grip to spare for turning, right when you need them to do both.
How to fix it
Brake bias is the most direct lever here, since this is specifically a braking-phase problem.
- Shift brake bias rearward. This takes some of the braking load off the front tires and gives them more grip in reserve for turning. Move it in small increments and check that the rear doesn’t start locking instead.
- Soften the front springs slightly. A front end that compresses a bit more under braking keeps the tire’s contact patch working longer instead of overloading it all at once.
- Add front downforce if available. More front aero load gives the front tires extra grip specifically at speed, which helps during braking zones on faster corners.
Start with brake bias. It’s the more forgiving change, and it directly targets the tire that’s overloaded.
What not to change first
Don’t reach for front anti-roll bar or camber changes first. Braking understeer is a straight-line, pre-rotation problem, not a mid-corner balance problem, so bar and camber changes aimed at cornering grip won’t address what’s happening while the car is still traveling mostly straight under brakes.
How to test the change
Brake into the same corner at the same point and pressure as before, and check whether the front still locks or the car still pushes before you can turn in. If bias felt right but the car now locks the rear under hard braking, you’ve gone too far and should bring it back toward front slightly.
When the diagnosis changes
If the car brakes fine but still won’t rotate once you’re off the brakes and turning at steady speed, that’s apex understeer, not braking understeer, and needs a different fix. If the problem only appears braking from very high speed, check aero balance before making further mechanical changes.
