These are two separate problems that happen to show up in the same corner, not one imbalance with two symptoms. Entry understeer comes from forward weight transfer overloading the front tires under braking. Exit oversteer comes from the rear tires losing grip under acceleration. Different phase, different cause, different fix, and fixing one won’t automatically fix the other.
Why it’s tempting to treat this as one problem
It feels like a single “unbalanced car” complaint: push going in, loose coming out. But the corner phase framework exists precisely because the same car can behave differently in different phases. Forward weight transfer under braking and rearward weight transfer under throttle are different physical events, and a setup change aimed at one often does nothing to the other, or makes it worse.
How to actually diagnose this
- Treat entry and exit as separate diagnoses. Don’t look for one global change. Work the entry understeer problem using the entry fix list, and the exit oversteer problem using the exit fix list, independently.
- Fix entry first. Entry problems affect how you carry speed into and through the corner, which changes what the car is doing by the time you reach the apex and exit. Get entry stable before judging exit behavior.
- Re-test exit after the entry fix. Sometimes an entry fix, like softening front springs, changes weight distribution timing enough to shift exit behavior too. Don’t make an exit change until you’ve confirmed the exit problem is still there.
