How Do I Set Up My Tires?

Use camber to even out the inner-to-outer temperature spread on each tire, then use pressure to fine-tune the middle. Every other setup change ultimately exists to help the tires do this one job, so tire setup isn’t a separate step, it’s the check you run after everything else.

Why tires are the final word on setup

The contact patch, that small area of rubber actually touching the track, is where every force gets transmitted: braking, accelerating, cornering, all of it. Springs, anti-roll bars, and dampers all exist to manage how load reaches that patch. Tires are where you find out whether all of it worked.

Reading tire temperatures correctly

  1. Measure at the right moment. Temps taken on a straight don’t reflect cornering load. Check right after the section of track where the tire is working hardest, and expect it to take a few laps to reach real operating temperature.
  2. Look at inner, middle, and outer. The goal is the most even spread you can get across all three under cornering load, not a specific number.
  3. Use camber to fix inner/outer imbalance. Inner hotter than outer means too much camber. Outer hotter than inner means not enough. Adjust until they’re close.
  4. Use pressure to fine-tune the middle. More pressure raises the middle temperature, less pressure lowers it.

Tire pressure changes more than temperature

A tire is a flexible structure filled with air, so it behaves like a spring. Raising pressure stiffens that corner of the car; lowering it softens it. That means a pressure change can shift balance the same way a small spring change would, and it’s one of the few adjustments you can often still make mid-session.

Using tires to diagnose the rest of the car

Front tires consistently hotter than the rear points to understeer or excessive front sliding. Rear tires hotter than the front points to oversteer or wheelspin on exit. If temps look off but the driving is aggressive and sliding a lot, check technique before you start changing the setup, hard inputs generate heat that can mask what the setup is actually doing.

The bigger picture

Tires reflect every decision made everywhere else in the setup. Check them after any significant change, not just once at the start, since a change to springs, ARBs, or ride height changes how load reaches the contact patch too.
