A setup that looks fast on a graph can still be difficult to drive consistently in practice. Focusing on what you actually experience, how the car responds, and where confidence is gained or lost, leads to setups that are not only fast, but repeatable.
The method
- Name the phase. Notice exactly when in the corner something feels off: braking and turn-in, steady mid-corner, or under throttle.
- Name the imbalance. Is the front pushing wide (understeer) or the rear stepping out (oversteer)?
- Apply the matching fix. Each phase-and-imbalance combination has a known set of effective adjustments. You don’t need a data trace to know that a car pushing wide under braking has overloaded front tires.
- Confirm with repeated laps. Consistency across several laps, not a single fast one, tells you whether the change actually worked.
The bigger picture
This approach isn’t a workaround for not having telemetry, it’s arguably the more direct method. When you understand the cause of a problem through feel, the solution becomes much easier to find than staring at a trace trying to reverse-engineer what you already felt in the car.
