The order that works
- Start with weight distribution and ride height. These set the platform everything else operates on. Get the car sitting at a sensible height that avoids bottoming before tuning anything else.
- Set springs to control that platform. Springs should be stiff enough to support the car under its highest loads while staying as soft as possible everywhere else for mechanical grip.
- Use anti-roll bars for balance, not springs. Once ride height and springs are set, use anti-roll bars to fine-tune front-to-rear balance, particularly at the apex.
- Set the differential for how the track demands power delivery. Tighter for corners that need rotation resistance under power, looser for corners that need more freedom to rotate.
- Dial in alignment last. Camber, caster, and toe are refinements on top of a setup that’s already fundamentally balanced, not a substitute for getting the bigger levers right first.
- Add aero and gearing for the specific track. These are the most track-dependent settings and are easiest to get right once the car’s baseline balance is already sound.
Keep it simple at first
Resist the urge to make large or frequent changes while you’re still building the baseline. A setup that’s changed a dozen times before you’ve even driven it consistently will be harder to judge than a simple one you know well.
